Aside from my extensive technical front end expertise, I am also a designer and an artist. Whether it’s personal projects or custom design or art for clients and employers, being creative is a big part of my skillset.

E-book design for EMS

This e-book incorporated a lot of elements, including a UI (HTML5) widget which I talk about on the UI page, embedded videos, and animated HTML5. But I also made composite images and hand-drew a number of the graphics.

Branding and logo design

My graphic design has adhered to various existing branding guidelines…or in the case of my years as independent design firm 75design, I created the brands myself. I often incorporated personal touches for my small and medium sized clients, such as favorite elements of nature or colors, or someone’s beloved dog.

Illustrator composites

These graphics were composites or built up in Adobe Illustrator to evoke various CAD products, for a contract with a CAD tutorial company.

Illustration and drawing

I’ve had my hand in art a long time, so hand drawing and illustrating is very rewarding for me. To the right are six drawings that were storyboards commissioned by National Fiber Technology, a west coast mascot company trying to break into the east coast. They proposed a new mascot for the Lowell, MA Spinners, an MLB team…”Millie-Gater” (evoking the Lowell mills) to join existing mascots Canaligator and Allie-Gater. The story was that they would get married, get pregnant, and have a kid, the last stage of which was “preteen Mille”! I was very excited to watch this unfold during the next baseball season! Alas, the Spinners are no more after a MLB restructuring.

I have also done custom drawing for wedding invitations and other work for clients and employers over the years, including this drawing of the Vesper Country Club building.

Fine art work

I have a background in fine art, primarily oil painting. The “Still Life In Hockey” was a gift to my Boston Bruins-loving brother for his college graduation, and “Fabric Landscape I” was part of a short series where I let fabric become the subject matter.

Photography

Though a lot of my photos these days are taken on my smartphone, I do dabble in DSLR photography, and am quite adept with Lightroom and other applications for enhancing and editing photography.
